Is Chester Zoo shutting down?
We’re open daily from 10am with FREE on-site parking. The Diamond Jubilee Quarter at the main entrance opens at 9.30am. Don’t forget to take a look at what’s changed so you can enjoy a safe day out at the zoo….OPENING TIMES.

How long does it take to get around Chester Zoo?
Without stopping to look at any thing probably 2 and a half hours. Obviously with the kids it can take us all day.
Can you take photos at Chester Zoo?
Whether you’re a total beginner or have some photography experience, all are welcome on this Chester Zoo photography course. If you have your own DSLR camera bring it along, but if not there’s the possibility of hiring one through Rachel. Enjoy your day and capture some great images of those magnificent mammals!
Why did the monorail close at Chester Zoo?
In June 2019, Chester Zoo announced that it would be closing the monorail as it had become unreliable and now covered less than half the zoo because of expansion to over 125 acres (51 ha). The zoo also stated that it “no longer fits our vision for a world-class modern zoo”. The system closed on 3 September 2019.
Is there a soft play at Chester Zoo?
During half term we visited Chester Zoo to check out the newly opened PLAY! space featuring a range of different areas created by play experts and launched at the end of May. The Madagascar PLAY! space is a really active adventure play area designed to encourage children to explore and have fun.

In zoos in some regions of the world, EEHV is the single greatest cause of death in young Asian elephants. Sadly, Chester Zoo has had a long tragic history of deaths from this disease: five elephants succumbed to the disease in the six years up to 2015.

We’re always looking at ways to enhance the visitor experience, and our zoo app is just one of the ways to help you find your way around our 128 acre site. This app will be your guide for the day. Search for your favourite animal, ask for directions and the app will take you right there.
What are the wetland areas in Chester Zoo?
