Yankee Zulu on the Jackmode Show

Written by  Dizzy

"I've been collecting vinyl from my early teens and every time I dig into my collection I'm always finding hidden gems." Yankee Zulu Saturday at 22:00.

Who are you?

John McIver aka Yankee Zulu and one half of The Jet Project.

Where are you from?

Belfast.

What do you do?

First and foremost I'm a DJ, but that has now developed into being a producer, promoter and I run digital imprint Extended Play with Timmy Stewart and Chris Duckenfield.

What was your first big breakthrough as an act?

Big breakthrough, I suppose I have had a Yankee Zulu track on Dirtybird and a Jet Project track on Get Physical, both were personal breakthroughs for me as these were the two labels I aspired to be on when I started out making beats.

Is there an all-time favourite track you wish you'd produced?

Don't know if I have a favourite track, but every time I hear something by Carl Craig I'm like “that’s genius” wish I had of thought of that.

What’s the most ridiculous promotional thing you’ve done?

I don't think I've been too ridiculous in promoting myself or Jet Project, maybe I need to step my game up, lol.

Which is more appealing to you while djing - to dig out a relatively old track, or play the newest release?

To be honest, I have always mixed old and new stuff up in my sets. It's the way I have always played. I've been collecting vinyl from my early teens and every time I dig into my collection I'm always finding hidden gems. I think you have to dip in and out of older tracks and the more well known older stuff to get the crowd on board when you play. Nothing worse than a Dj just dropping new stuff all night.

If you had to do something different what do you think you would end up doing?

It would have to be something creative, probably something in art or fashion.

What do you have going on for the rest of 2010?

Plenty going on for the rest of 2010, were do I start.

Well on the production front we have just signed some big Jet Project tracks to Riva Starr for his Snatch! Label, also have a big release coming up on Renaissance and we are currently working on a follow up release to "Understand This" for Get Physical.

I've also got a 3 new Yankee Zulu remixes ready to drop any time on Anabatic, Deadfish and Bakehaus. As well as all this we are working hard on our own digital label Extended Play, got some very tasty eps in the pipeline.

On the Djing front, you can find me playing at our Jet Project residency at Yello Belfast plus at the party I put on with Timmy Stewart and Paddy Towe, UNiT. We have just moved venue and have some very exciting guests lined up for the rest of the year. I will also be touring as usual and plans are underway as we speak for an Australian tour hopefully before the end of the year.
