Label Focus: Dumb Unit

Written by  Elie Eidelman
Dumb Unit's Jeremy P. Caulfield goes another round with SLIM Mag and Sweat Lodge Radio prior to hosting Tsuba's Bearweasel Friday on his Pow!Wow residency in Berlin. Tune IN! Thursday at 18:00 for the label's music.

When people think of Jeremy P. Caulfield they think of Canadian house and techno. After so many years in Berlin, do you still feel that you represent Canada?

Hmm that's a good question, My German teacher says I'll be a real Berliner when I speak more German than English and that's still a while off ! But of course it's my home! It's my Home-base even more so as I'm not really nationalistic and wish less borders and passport control existed anyhow .. But it's my home because this is also where my musical mates are and where the people I collaborate most with where my home is, where my wife's cafe is etc .. But Toronto is on a rebound music wise with people like Art Department and others seeing huge success so there is always this pride thing in seeing people who were part of the scene for years hit a good stride ..

Speaking of Berlin, how is your experience as a dj and a music industry person been in this city?

I can't say I have ever met much resistance to my ideas or aspirations in Berlin, rather I've met very open minded friends and a lot of cooperative people who simply look at the big picture. On that note, more than ever I'm no longer happy simply being a foreigner here and I'm making much more of an effort on being a Berliner and inherently living in Germany. It's been good to me and I want to make sure I'm going to give back to it in the future: by having 10 little Born in Germany babies and taxing the system ;-)

Your label Dumb Unit has been making waves with some solid releases and legendary parties. What's next for the label?

I've tightened up the team and really just focusing on a bunch of core artists right now: Cesare Vs Disorder, Maetrik, Walker and Agaric, Seph, Pherox, Elon and myself along with a rotating band of up and comers like Pablo Denegri and extended family like Exercise One etc. Right now along with constant high quality releases we are doing a lot of label nights, hitting up all the festivals, playing together and having a good time. I'm working very closely with Harry Klein who is my booking agent and so I'm also excited to play with DJ's like Dario Zenker & Julietta. I'm trying to keep it all straight forward and fun.. I think that's what it's about right now, times are tough so you have to simply be a good bunch of people having a good time and making good music.

I heard you run your own blog. Can you tell our readers about it?

It used to be called Wander / Loiter as that's what it was about, but recently I turned it into Jpcaulfield.com  because even though I sent other people questions or assignments for it, I would never get anything back. People would actually hide from me! So now I do it on my own, it's mostly just comical anecdotes with a bit of a deeper twist based on some of my adventures and thoughts while on the road, it's also a way to pay respect to those on the other end of the stick, the promoters and locals who might not make headlines all the time.

Your studio is in a building with many other interesting acts. Do you guys collaborate? Is there social interaction with the other artists?

Since getting it in May I have had about 8 days in the studio! I've been on the road and then at SONAR etc. so I've barely started to work in it! But this month I have much more time so I'm hoping to meet some interesting people . But already I have mostly collaborations with a lot of artists from the label. I'm actually also quite a solitary, only child during downtimes, I like my thinking time .. and I get edgy hearing all the "industry talk" and gossip and often hang out with a lot of people who are only slightly related to the scene . It keeps me fresh and let's me hear and see another side of life. But I really enjoying hanging out with Cesare and Walker and this is who I share a studio with!

What's next for you release wise in the near future?

Again I'm keeping it tight, next up is our first DYNASTY release with myself & Cesare and two other tracks from Cesare, then an Elon EP with an Exercise One remix, then another DYNASTY EP with a magical track from Pablo Denegri and then Cesare's new Solo EP with a remix by me and Konrad Black and I'm waiting for some new music from Maetrik, and also I hope something from Seph but he's being kind of lazy ;-)
