Jerome Sydenham & Ibadan

Written by  Elie Eidelman
'Self-employment is the only way to go for a cat like me.' Jerome Sydenham and Ibadan Records Featured this week. Tune IN! Thursday to Saturday.

You worked as A&R for Atlantic Records in New York during the 90's, and signed some of the big pop acts of the time. Do you miss it?

Honestly, I only miss the perks. Self-employment is the only way to go for a cat like me.

Soon after you started your own label, Ibadan. Can you compare today's dance music market to how it was when you started?

The market was quite different then. Sales were significantly better; it was mainly a vinyl market, so therefore more competitive in marketing/promotion. Also, one has to remember there was no computer technology for DJing, so all the action in the clubs took place on vinyl which made it fiercely more competitive.

What are the plans for Ibadan in the future?

Ibadan will feature an immediate new release from Singapore techno superstar Xhin with some stunning remixes by myself, Drumcell and Audioinjection, soon to be followed by a great full-length album from Argy (late September 2011). Early next year we will also release a phenomenal debut house album from producer/DJ Quell. To top things off will be the eagerly-anticipated remix package of the Function vs. Jerome Sydenham project, featuring an all-star ensemble of remixers, and, as always, we will continue to strive for quality and high standards in everything we do.

You are also known for your own productions and musical collaborations over the years. What were some of the highlights for you, and will you collaborate more in the near future?

In earlier days, it was Kerri Chandler, Joe Claussell, and Dennis Ferrer, respectfully. Currently, it has been Argy, Function, and Quell respectfully, with a few other surprises coming in the near future.

Besides Ibadan you also run labels such as Apotek and Avocado. Why do you have different labels, and what does each one represent in your eyes?

Ibadan is the parent label which will continue to focus on all genres of electronic music and beyond. Apotek Records, on the other hand, specifically focuses on the more techno side of things. As for Avocado, this is a special project between Rune RK and myself. Let's not forget; last but not least, we have UK Promotions which focuses on the seamier side of things within the house/tech genres.

Taken from SLIM Mag September Issue

Jerome Sydenham & Ibadan Feature will air Thursday September 22nd at 18:00, Friday at 12:00, and Saturday at 11:00.

    Spectacles of the Society
Yes, the spectacle is entertaining, and it definitely draws a crowd. Add to that, the strong human need to want to place things in order. But the notion of the curator as 'taste-maker' remains a bit of a snag.
