Trickski Featured

Written by  Elie Eidelman
'Sexyness works everywhere! That being said, it is important to know that the slow, yet sexy and powerful soulfulness is only possible if you have a proper warm up.' Trickski featured all week.

Let's start with some exciting news. Your new full length album just came out. How long was this in the making and how does it feel to have it out in the world?

We are very excited that Unreality is finally out. Especially because finishing the album did take us quite some time. This is mainly due to the fact that we put a lot of effort in the production of each single track... Each track was supposed to be able to stand for itself as something unique, something solid, something that can stand the test of time. You know, we have never been purists: it was never about creating a Trickski version of whatever is super-hot right now. We've been doing that Slowhouse thing for ever, pretty much from release number one about 7 years ago when nobody talked about it, when slow house did not even exist as a term.

The album came out on Suol. How did the connection with them happen and do you see them as your main label now?

Suol is great. We are very happy to have joined this lovely little family. No disrespect to the bigger labels we released on before. They were all super as well. But being on a small label with a limited amount of artists and such amazing guys like Chopstick and Johnjon that run it, you cant go wrong. Since there are less artists (and styles) to take care of, they can do everything in a much more focused way. We are good friends with pretty much everybody on the label. We all get along very well and support us all of the time. There is no real hierarchy that makes you feel like you better shut up since you are the newbie or you think like: WTF!? who is that kiddo interfering with my business? So, in a way Suol became our new home, yes.

We will still be releasing on other labels but Suol is our home.

Speaking of labels, what ever happened to your own label 'Members Of The Tick'?

MOTT was great fun and an amazing experience. But we put it on ice. Possibly it will never be woken up again. Maybe it will see the light of day again like the Ötzi.

Seriously: since the vinyl sales in general went down and Sonar Kollektiv, which was the mothership of MOTT, had to rethink it's strategy, we gave it a break. It felt like it was the right moment since we had just released the compilation. On top of that, every single was very expensive due to its fine materials and expensive printing costs. Because of this, we had to sell a substantial amount of 12"s to break even. When we started out it was easy, the second MOTT sold almost 4000 vinyls. But with the last ones came a certain decay of vinyl sales... On top of that we were finished studying and needed to focus more on other things than running a sub label. We still needed time for producing ourselves. It is a little sad, but we had to make a decision.

In Berlin you are famous for your sets that build slowly and deep and pull the crowed in to a point where you can keep the slow BPM and still rock. Do you find this hard when on tour in other cities?

Especially at Cookies during our resident nights (we played there once a month for almost 3 years) we could work on this, which was something really special. At cookies many times we had the place for ourselves all night long. There was no pressure of either the "main act" or ourselves to get things banging too quickly. After keeping things slower and soulful, we realized that more and more people actually did really enjoy that. There were quite a few people coming to our night especially for that since  there are hardly any places and djs in town that dare to do this. It takes patience and confidence. Plus you need the trust of the club owner, booker and manager. We are very happy to have had that. Thank you Cookies!

About your question of this kind of attitude and set at other cities: Sexyness works everywhere! That being said, it is important to know that the slow, yet sexy and powerful soulfulness is only possible if you have a warm up dj that is capable of a proper warm up. He needs to know what warm up is about. Since many times enthusiastic newbie's or less experienced djs do the warm up, they wanna show off and prove that they know what's hot right now. But this is not what 'warming up' is about. After such a start to the night, it is simply impossible to get back to some sexy and deep stuff. Warming up is like the foreplay. The longer and better you do it, the more exciting every next step forward gets, but then again: we also like to tougher, full on. Because foreplay is foreplay, but you still want something like a peak-time. So, you know, we don't exclusively play slow. But it's definitely nice when we can. Meaning it's definitely nice when a promoter let's us start early in order to prepare a big proper house peaktime with a nice bit of foreplay to heat things up before.

What's next for Trickski release wise and where can we hear you play next?

On august 4th we play all night long at cookies again to celebrate 7 years of Trickski. As you can possibly imagine, this is gonna be special for us. Also since it is not only Trickski's Bday, but also Daniels' Bday. The next highlight for us is gonna be our live set, that we are very excited about. It feels like we can get the sound of Trickski across even better and more compressed than in a dj set. The world premiere for that will be at the Suol label night in the end of august at Watergate, August 27th, to be exact.

On top of that there will be the next single to the album with amazing remixes. Plus we produced a track with the amazing soul clap kids about a year ago back in Boston which is gonna be out on Permanent Vacation. I guess that is enough at first, isn't it?

Yes, the spectacle is entertaining, and it definitely draws a crowd. Add to that, the strong human need to want to place things in order. But the notion of the curator as 'taste-maker' remains a bit of a snag.
