For the release of the new album "Entropic City", SLR features Belgian artist Peter van Hoesen.
1. You have a new album coming out today, please tell us a bit about it and the process of making it?
Entropic City is my first techno album, after having produced five experimental albums and ep's between 2000 and 2006. For me the album represents not only the dark, bassy techno people know from me, but also slower, more introspective tracks. The production of the album started early 2009, but some of the parts are older than that. I have a massive amount of unfinished sounds and tracks on my hard drives, and go back and forth between them all the time, to use older parts in new tracks. Once I have an idea of what the album was going to be about I started eliminating certain tracks, elaborating on others. Everything was finalized at the end of November 2009.
2. What can we expect from your exclusive mix airing on SLR?
It's a mix of old and new tracks of mine. I find it important to present people with an overview of all my work, instead of just focusing on the latest tracks. I'm still very happy with the 2008 and 2009 releases I did, so I included some of those alongside new album material.
3. Any plans to release new materiel with your monikers?
Not at the moment, but never say never :-)
4. You release a wide range of music, what were some of the influences which defined you as an artist?
There are so many influences... let's see. First of all there's Telex, a Belgian band that got me interested in electronic music at a very young age. From there on the list is nearly endless, as music itself constitutes an endless universe. Once you start exploring music seriously you will find that the search never stops - there's always something interesting you haven't heard before, leading to another interesting sound or movement. But I guess it's safe to say that most of my influences are electronic, alongside early new wave, post-punk and contemporary classical music. That doesn't always show itself in my music, but I know the influences are there. As far as contemporary artists go I can say I've always been a big Autechre fan, they are simply unique.
5. Where can we catch you play in the coming weeks?
There are two dates in Germany, one is in Hamburg on the 2nd or April, the other one at Berghain on April 17th. All the dates are listed on www.myspace.com/petervanhoesen
Peter van Hoesen exclusive mix for SLR will air Monday March 22nd at 20:00, and Tuesday at 10:00
