Nikola Gala Featured

Written by  Elie Eidelman
Greek-Berlin based producer Nikola Gala has released for the likes of Rekids, Ibadan and Freerange. Tune IN! all week for his feature on Sweat Lodge.

You managed to release on big labels such as Rekids, Ibadan and Freerange while still living in Greece. Was this a hard process? How did your connections with these labels come about?

Indeed, although Greece is a beautiful country it's not the best place to get to know people from the music industry, so in my case the connecting link with the mentioned labels was the internet. I had some tracks that I thought 'this could work there and that there' and started sending blind emails (with links to my demo tracks). I call them blind emails because I didn't know if there will be someone who will check the email (and listen to the demo) and in the case someone does then who is he?

I was happy enough to get feedback from these labels quickly and they offered me deals and it worked. I hear people saying you need to have strong connections to release music on 'big' labels, yes I agree to some degree but the most important thing to me is to have something interesting to present.

Whats the scene like today in your home country Greece?

Used to be better, much better, but nothing like today. Greece is a country known for the beaches, food, summer-time, but not for club-life and that is correct, but still there were some great clubs like the legendary Decadence Club in my home town Thessaloniki, which hosted great events and 'huge' guest Dj's from House to Techno to Electro to Trance, but those days are over since 2006-2007. On the other hand not having guest dj's from abroad every weekend gave more space and opportunities to local dj's to start performing, but all this is happening in quite small venues and bars most of the time which can not be compared to the club vibe. There are a few good festivals though like 'REWORKS' which is running for 4-5 years now, it have gained much attention and is considered to be as one of the top festivals in Europe.

Recently you relocated to Berlin. How do you think this move effects your career and music?

Yes that happened in October 2010, living in a place were not much happening (music wise) is not the best thing if you want to take your career to another level. So far I have met lots of interesting people, people that some times I were familiar (producers,dj's,label owners), but never had the chance to meet them personally. The funny thing is that this is happening in random, I just go to a cafe, bar, club and I meet people, this is Berlin. The thing I am enjoying the most so far is to be able to go out, listen to quality music and then hit back to my studio fully inspired and make beats. It's impossible not to get inspired with all these events and dj's playing in different places in Berlin on a daily basis, I am not sure if this is happening in any other place in the world.

You recently did a mix cd for Plastic City. Do you feel that in this day and age of Souncloud and blogs that a mix cd as a format still has a place in the market?

We are living in a digital world no doubt, and we are not going back.

But still there are records stores selling 12" and cd's, definitely the market is smaller but these formats still exist, that means that there are people supporting them. I like to call them 'romantic people', who like to go out on the street (instead of sitting in front of a computer and do the rest from there), go into a record store, then search and buy a product, not just the music and examine the art work if any, read the small letters on the covers and finally add it to their personal library, it's a holy process.

I personally miss those days going out to my local record store to listen to new stuff and meet people while having those never-ending discussions about music and other stuff.

Please tell us what's next for you and what releases we can expect in 2011?

Expect making more and more beats nothing new, I can't imagine my self doing something else. I have a couple of releases confirmed for the next few months, a 12" with CLAAP Records (GummiHz's new label) which is going to feature 2 tracks of mine and 1 track from John Dimas, this is going to be the 3rd release of CLAAP and then a 2x12" with four tracks on Rekids.

Artist of the Week: Nikola Gala will air Tuesday March 8th at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.
