Massimiliano Pagliara speaks with Sweat Lodge Radio about his background in dance, the collaboration with Gui.Tar, the addiction to analog sounds and much more in front of his artist feature.
You come from a background of theater-dance and choreography, do you believe this influences your production and do you think you will be involved in that world again?
My theatre-dance and choreography background definitely still has a certain influence on what I am doing now. The perception of time and space which are fundamental in choreography still play a certain role in my music. Whenever I approach a new track, I always try to re-create that kind of mood and atmosphere, as if I was still in an empty studio and starting to move my body. I am very happy that I had this dance education, it really means a lot to me, but I don´t think I would go back...music is now my new drug and I can´t live without it :)))) but like Grace Jones said once: NEVER SAY NEVER, NEVER SAY NO, NEVER SAY DON´T!! :)) so maybe one day I will be dancing again!
One of you new projects [SIC!] is a collaboration with the boys from Gui.Tar. How did you end up working together and can we expect more from this project in the future?
The gui.tar boys and I met a long time ago at parties. Back then, their first record on Careless Record had just came out, and I was totally obsessed with the track "Homeopathic Delight". In fact, I ended up using it for one of my video-performances. So we simply became really close friends, and started to hang out and eventually begun to make some tunes together. At that time, in 2006, I was already dj-ing and had just started to put together my studio, buy my first machines, to get into production, and I learned a lot from them, who were already much more advanced and knew a lot about composition and production techniques of course. Simon, aka Jules Etienne, is also my favorite guitar and bass player, and Alessandro one of my best singers! they are almost on every record which I have released so far. Ao at some points we felt that we could share our love and passion for music and try to combine all our different experiences and backgrounds. after a few experiments we decided to record some songs and that´s how our [sic!] project started. About the future? oh well, this is always difficult to answer :)) of course we want to do more, but the fact is also that we all are very busy with our individual projects and lives and it´s not always easy to coordinate...so, let´s see!
You released on legendary labels like Balihu, Eskimo and Rush Hour. What labels do you still inspire to be part of and why?
When I make music I never really think of specific labels beforehand, even though I have some favorite ones... I just make music the way I feel and then eventually this will find its place somewhere. Looking for a label is in general never really an easy thing to do, I actually kind of hate it...but I am now really happy that I have found some and that they want to release my stuff.
In your bio you mention your obsession with analog synths. What your favorite toy in your collection? Would you take them out of the studio for some live shows?
Yes I am very obsessed with analogue synths, drum computers and effects. And I am definitely talking about the old ones, mainly from the 80´s. Even if they always give me some problems and I have to spend a lot of money to repair
them I will never substitute them with any virtual plug ins! Still, I am always very interested and fascinated by new technology and soft wares, and I believe that the combination of both worlds, analogue and digital, is the best. That´s in fact what I do. I have many favourite toys in my collection, and it always depends on what I need to do in order to say which one is the best. For example, if i want to make a string pad, then I will definitely put my hands on my Roland's!
Please tell our listeners what's next for you release wise and what are your plans for 2011.
2011 is going to be a very full one, release wise. In fact my first Album will come out at the end of April on Live at Robert Johnson Records, followed by some singles and remixes on other labels, such as Needwant, Balihu, Cocktail D´amore... I also just started a new project with my friend Rotciv from Brasil called " The Rimshooters" and we have done 2 remixes for the Space Ranger guys which will be released on Lovemonk Records. So stay tuned!
