Dave Turov speaks out about the transition from the US to Berlin, his musical endeavors, and his latest project PullProxy.
1.You relocated from NYC to Berlin in 2003. Do you feel a big difference in your musical progression between yourself and your colleagues back home?
That's a good question. Yes and no. In a way, I played for more people, longer sets, and in bigger venues in Berlin and Europe than NYC and the rest of the US. But its not that simple. It's just as hard to stand out here as it is back home. Berlin became what I believe was (and still is) the most competitive DJ market in the world back in 2004-2005 and stayed that way. There are more opportunities to play here as nightlife is more ingrained in the European culture than in American, but there are many people competing for those spots.
Artistically, I think i developed more here in Berlin because the electronic music world centered here years ago, and I got to hear almost all the people I was following and who influenced me. Also I was lucky to book and play with most of them at my M parties. But it's hard to say where I would have developed faster. In NYC I probably would have had to maintain my consulting day job, leaving less time for music, but at the same time getting more work done I'm sure. Tough call. In the end, "Its All Useful" ;)
2.Your known for your legendary Wednesday parties in Berlin's WMF and Watergate clubs. will you go back to promoting events any time soon?
Another good question ;) I took some time off promoting regular parties to make time for other things. The M parties (Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays) were great, it's been over almost 6 years now since we started. I still do one off's here and there, we just had a great record release party at Arena Club for example. I think that my days of throwing a weekly or maybe even monthly parties are over. Instead we are going to concentrate on throwing bigger one-off parties in Berlin and Europe in conjunction with PullProxy.
3.John Selway and yourself have been producing together (Selway & Turov) and running CSM Records. Please tell us a bit about your collaborations and plans for the future.
John is my production mentor. I've learned almost everything I know about music production from Selway. He was the first real 'industry professional' that I became friends with back in the late 1990's, but we were friends long before we were label partners or production collaborators. CSM, which John founded in 1996 as a "minimal" label (when that word still meant something) was on a long break when we decided to relaunch it and I took over management duties in 2005. Since then John and I have collaborated on 4 releases together with more in the pipeline. CSM continues to grow, our last release CSM018 Less Scary EP with John and our friend Tony Rohr, quickly sold out. The current release CSM019, Selway's "The Ocean Before Me" is doing swell. CSM020 due out in late April, is my next solo EP.
4.What's in store for Dave Turov release wise?
CSM020 Useful EP is the next solo project, due out in late April. Also working on a release for Toys For Boys, as well as remixes for Tim Xavier's LTD400, Droid, and a new 'jazzy' collaboration project with live instrumentation. Recently I started to use more acoustic sounds in my productions which I would like to continue. Techno is great, but recording and collaborating with live musicians is even better. Computers don't talk back or give you ideas or roll the next joint.
5.Recently you founded PullProxy with Philip Hofmann. Can you tell are readers about the unique concept behind the company?
We started PullProxy as a direct result of what was happening in the dance music industry. The business changed, but we found that many companies working within it did not. Given our collective experience as bookers, publicists, artists, label managers, and artist managers, we started an integrated artist management agency to service the needs of professionals who want complete dedicated services (publicity, booking, + label management in one) but not want to manage 5-10 people on their own. We try to leverage all the latest technology possible to be as efficient as possible. Also we adjust our business plan constantly to reflect the current state of the industry. This way our artist can stay ahead, and we only dedicate resources to things that actually have a proven effect today (not yesterday). We try to operate lean, smart, and flexible as much as we can to best service our clients in what many consider to be a pretty tough business.
