Artist of the Week:Tim Xavier

Written by  Elie Eidelman
"I am sifting through all my music from the past 5 years, sampling it, and preparing parts to create a compilation of my music and sound." Tim Xavier special starting Tuesday.

1.You recently released your new full length album on Clink Records. Can you tell our listeners a bit about the process and what you had visioned with this album?

Most of the tracks stems in each tune are borrowed from earlier projects, including pieces that were started even back when I was living in Chicago (circa 2000-2003). The album is a combination of a lot of new ideas in which I mixed down with older sound design parts. I recorded most of the tracks live by mixing them on my mixing desk and muting and un-muting channels while doing live effect automation. In the beginning I was simply trying to make some tools for myself to DJ, then after getting more than 5-6 sequences together Camea (head of Clink Recordings) suggested that I go back with a fine tooth comb, perfect the live recordings and turn them into real pieces of music with beginnings, middles and ends....So I did.

2. Now that your new album is out can we expect some more Limited400 releases?

Yes! I am finally getting Limited Four Hundred running on a regular schedule again. When I started LTD400 in Brooklyn (circa 2006) our distributor was able to move well over 400 copies. Now with the decline in vinyl sales LTD400 can live up to it's limited status. The plan for the rest of 2010 and early 2011 is to continue releasing vinyl & digital sales, possibly bring on some new artists and remixers. But the persona stays the same; organic, dark, etheral, step sequences, modular stuff, maybe some new hints of Disco.....

3. As a master of mastering, working with labels such as Electric Deluxe, Supplement Facts, Minus, DFA, and B-Pitch, any tips of the trade you can share?

I have no specific groundbreaking tips... but I always advise friends and producers in my immediate circle to invest in a nice mixing desk and to utilize full duplex recording rather than internal bouncing. If a producer must mix internally I always say to go easy with compression on the master bus, and leave the sweetening and compression up to us!

4.What can we expect from you release wise in the near future?

I recently had two remixes come out on Dubfire's Sci-Tec Audio label, next week I have a 6x track digital release coming out on Butane & Someone Else's "Little Helper" Imprint. I also have a New 12” release by Pär Grindvik & Myself on my Limited-400 label that came out last week. Otherwise at the moment I am working on a new CD mix project for Clink. I am sifting through all my music from the past 5 years, sampling it, and preparing parts to create a compilation of my music and sound. It's not really an album but more a goulash of my music mixed from the past 5 years; "Tim Xavier Greatest Hits" Haha!

5.As you've traveled and played across the globe, what was one of your favorite spots to play and why?

There are so many fun places to play, but I think the one place that trumps all is Tokyo! Japanese techno fans have the best crowd response, they're the nicest people on the planet and the culture is incredibly deep interesting! I Heart Tokyo :)

Artist of the Week:Tim Xavier will air Tuesday September 7th at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.
