Artist of the Week:Max Skiba

Written by  Elie Eidelman
"Even if I'm doing something different I feel music in me. I can't explain it" Max Skiba chats with Elie Eidelman in front of his artist feature this week on SLR.

1. From a very young age your disco productions have been supported by legends of the genre like Danny Wang, Steve Koety and you were even remixed by dj-legend Nicky Siano, resident of Studio 54. How dose a young producer from Poland get such musical depth that can inspire the top Disco heads?

I don't know I just love music and I love to produce. I love to listen to the music and dance to it, and to play on the instruments. Almost every single day I've got an idea for a new song in my head, it's just happening. Even if I'm doing something different I feel music in me. I can't explain it :-)

2. A couple of years ago I caught your live show at Cookies Club in Berlin, and was surprised to see you performing with Reason. How did you get such great sound with such an old school program and what tools and programs do you use today?

I liked the look of this program, I mean the interface. I used it mostly as a sequencer, but the sounds I used weren't reason ones. I record synths, voices, percussion, guitars, live instruments. I love acoustic sounds.

3. Your new project with singer Kathy Diamond (KDMS) is out on Gomma and getting massive response. How did you come to work with her?

It was about four years ago, she came to Warsaw to party and I said I love her music/voice and tracks, she said that she enjoyed my work too. We started one track then. Few months later she came back to Warsaw, we recorded another track... then we produced few more tracks and we decided it's better to have it as a new project than just a regular featuring story. That's how The KDMS born. Few months later two musicians joined us and we're a full band now :-)

4. Can you tell us a bit about your process working with live vocalist?

It depends on vocalist. Kathy for example is a very talented songwriter, she's able to write a hit song just on her knees 20 minutes before studio recording. It's amazing. Then you've got the vocal, the ideas and you start to work, to make some sounds, noises. Once you finish the track you wait one or two weeks, you don't listen to it... Than you come back with "fresh ears" you change it... and it's on and on like this until you have something that satisfies you.

5. What's next for Max Skiba and KDMS? What releases would we expect in the near future?

My new solo ep is gonna be out within one month I guess on Under The Shade. It features two new tracks "One To Pray To" with Snax and "Fire Dance". I've got remixes by Ray Mang and Beg To Differ (new Nick Chacona project).

Full KDMS LP is nearly finished so better keep your eye on this project :-)

There's also new remix for Disco Drunkards track "Death Of A Genius" coming out end of this month.

Artist of the Week:Max Skiba will air Tuesday September 14th at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.

I am somewhat lazy of nature. Tending to a coal oven doesn’t sound fun to me. And though the cold does keep me moving with music, my other life-skills seem to suffer at it’s hand.
