Artist of the Week:Jonas Kopp

Written by  Elie Eidelman
Jonas Kopp recaps a very intense year touring Europe's finest and releasing for the majors in front of his artist feature this week on Sweat Lodge Radio.

1. You are coming towards the end of your first major European tour which included some of the bigger clubs around. Please tell us a bit of your experiences from the tour good and bad?

This tour was super positive for my career, I was playing Live at Berghain, the best techno club in the world at the moment... It was a super experience for me, I knew the professional side of the club because they are looking at each detail, I had a super nice night there. Also I had good nights at Propaganda (Moscow), Dunkel (Copenhagen) and a super party in Magdeburg. I am very glad to work with PullProxy agency. They are professionals and good people, that´s what's important for me. It´s the beginning of bigger times for me .. I will be coming to Europe, 3 or 4 times a year.

2. With your recent releases you have been getting lots of support from artist like Ben Klock & Marcel Dettmann and have been in the top charts across the board. Has this come as a Surprise?

The big surprise for me was when I had received an email from Ben Klock, inviting me to send him some unreleased stuff of mine for his Berghain 04 mix compilation. It was a honor for me and a big opportunity for my career. So I made 6 or 7 tracks in one month. Ben has taken the "Michigan Lake" track and some of the other tracks became the "Ruda EP" on Curle Recordings.

3. Your based in Argentina. Can you tell our listeners a bit about the scene in your home country?

The scene in Argentina has many different styles of electronic music. Unfortunately, trance music is the principal protagonist of the night, but techno and house are still alive since many years ago. There are 2 clubs where you can listen quality Techno and House. The best underground place in Buenos Aires is "Cocoliche". It´s the techno place at the moment, where many big and underground names from the techno and house scene are playing, and the other club is Crobar, it´s bigger than Cocoliche but the program is super cool. I usually play in Crobar and Cocoliche when I am in Buenos Aires..

4. Whats next for Jonas Kopp release wise in the near future?

The next is a split vinyl on Lucy´s label Stroboscopic Artefacts, one track of mine called Alkitran, I am looking forward to this EP. Than I will start a new label, vinyl only with super limited copies. I will use a different artist name and I will release only my own stuff. More info soon . Also I will release new stuff on my main labels in 2011.

5.On one hand you are known for your techno side, but if I go by your latest dj charts they are full of deep house gems like Jus Ed and John Daly. Is your sound changing or is this just an expression of your diversity as a dj?

As dj I play house and techno, but I play real house, soulful house. Chicago and Detroit stuff always, and also the techno I play becomes more striped down and deep. So it´s easy when you have to do a dj set mixing up between house and techno.

Artist of the Week:Jonas Kopp will air Tuesday September 21st at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.

I am somewhat lazy of nature. Tending to a coal oven doesn’t sound fun to me. And though the cold does keep me moving with music, my other life-skills seem to suffer at it’s hand.
