Artist of the Week:Esther Duijn

Written by  Elie Eidelman
Elie Eidelman chats with Esther Duijn about her home town of Amsterdam, the digital revolution, and her transition to the studio for her SLR artist feature.

1. As a self proclaimed digger, how do you feel about the new generation of Beatport dj's and the new mp3 culture?

I think we can't deny the evolution of technology. So therefore in the now one can go hand in hand with the other. People / DJ's can decide whatever method they use to make themselves heard. For me personally, I love the sound, feel even the smell ;) of vinyl, but when I can't find the tune I want on the black gold I will go to the digi sites and buy the wave (pref. not MP3).

The vinyl industry of course is suffering hard from the digi sales and worse the illegal downloads. But vinyl has been around for so long and survived a couple of serious blows (like the introduction of CD's in the 80's). For me it seems that nowadays playing vinyl has more of a cult status. As long as there are labels with love for vinyl and people with love for playing vinyl it will exist.

I still buy loads of new music on vinyl, as well as, old gems I come across. I love playing vinyl though I understand what advantages Traktor, for example, can have in a dj set (playing 4 tracks simultaneously with added effects on top for example is a very cool aspect of it). It's a whole different way of DJing with Traktor then DJing with vinyl and with both it can be super interesting - when you do it right of course ;)

2. Your style is influenced by the deep house sounds of Detroit and it seems that a lot of fresh producers from Amsterdam are bringing it with Quality from this sound. Please tell us a bit about what's going on with this in your town?

There is a lot of good music coming from Amsterdam for decades already. The Rushhour label is a good example of that. The scene in Amsterdam is vibrant and diverse. It has been since we heard for the first time of house music here in.. when was it.. '88? I can't remember, I was too young back then ;)

3. Recently you dove into the world of production. Has this changed your attitude when you dj or are your bringing your dance-floor experience back into the studio?

It goes both ways. I've been listening to house since I was a little girl and I play at clubs all over the world for many years now. So I do use those experiences in our tracks & vice versa I really go deep into sets cuz my understanding of the way music works has evolved massively and that really helps to make a solid flow.

4. What can we expect from you release wise in the up coming year?

At least two releases are on the way. A various artist release on Exquisite and a track on an English label called Feelharmonic with a remix of Anton Zap. We are working with D.A.D. on 2 white label releases, but I can't really tell wassup with that. You might recognize it's ours or not..hehehe ;)

5. As a dj who rocked some of the most known clubs in Europe, can you tell us about some memorable experience that stands out?

Well of course one of my most intense experiences was playing at Panorama Bar Berlin, a dream come true. Pannebar gave me the honors to start of the night with a 4 hour set. I started of with the deepest most obscure music and build up to solid grooving house & techno and the people went crazy on it all. That was just insane!! But there are quite a lot of epic moments I had playing at clubs (like Trouw Amsterdam for example) and afters, illegal warehouse parties and even at garden parties or basements with friends...

Yet everywhere I look, in almost every club, it's fucking amateur hour, mixer driven into the red, turned up as loud as possible, monitors never turned down to actually check how the music is sounding out there on the mf dancefloor.

Another factor which I feel is vital to a clubs longevity is support of the locals. If the average Berlin party goers like your club, and are in regular attendance then you are on the right track.
