"seeing myself first as a musician, performing live with my own music was always the most natural thing to do" Dekay on his artist feature this week on SLR.
You have recently collaborated with artist like Andre Crom and Elie Eidelman . Do you prefer working in a team then working alone? How does it effect your music?
That's a good question. there is a big difference between both. Working alone could be something very liberating and artistic wise you have the freedom to do what you want and make no compromises. But on the other hand, I think that there is a something that's border crossing and expanding in working with other people, so I really like to do it as well, and it contributes to my production skills a lot. Especially it helped me to realize as a musician and a performer that didn't come from the Djing side, how to approach this music, that in the end of the day is made for Djs to play and should get people to move their asses. Also production wise it is always good to have two minds and sets of ears on the mission. And good result is when you get a track, which is far-out and different from something each artist would have done on his own. I would say that for me both ways are important, but for sure making music with other people is way more fun.
2.Dekay only performs live in a market dominated by Dj's. Have you thought of crossing over and djing yourself?
Well seeing myself first as a musician, performing live with my own music was always the most natural thing to do. But I actually have Dj’d a few times in the past and I loved it, and will defiantly do it again in the future. It is way more relaxed and technically simple then performing live, and it lets you be freer to feel the party and the crowd. Actually it's totally two different art forms, but in the end I think that as long as you don't have a band behind you on stage most of the people on the dance floor don't really care, and can't really recognize if it is a Live Act or a Dj set.
3.Your influences are taken from many directions. I can detect sounds from Disco and Jazz. Please tell us a bit about your influences.
I guess that it all started back at home and thanks to my father who's a real music addict, and actually used to play himself, that exposed me to Jazz music from an early age. When I was nine my parents sent me to jazz piano lessons and that was my first experience with playing music. Later on in my teenage years I really got in to break-dancing so we used to dance and listen to a lot of old school, electro, funk, disco and hip hop music that really got deep into my system. Of course what recently influences me a lot is simply classic rock n' roll, especially all the progressive and psychedelic spectrum of it. The 60's and the 70's were such an awesome time for music. I think that every type of music that I hear and I like somehow influences my work.
4.As a former live Jazz musician have you considered bringing more live instruments into your live show?
Defiantly, expending the show is always something I wanted to do and experience with. The creative potential of the fusion between Electronic and Live Music is unlimited. For sure from the crowd's point of view it's more exciting to see a full band on stage than just one dude behind a laptop. Actually I have already made some steps in that direction with a new collaboration I am doing these days with a talented Guitar player and a production partner called Nunu. We already made three tracks together and the next step should be to take it on to the stage, and in the future to expend it even more. Who knows, maybe one day Dekay will turn in to a full band project.
5.What can we expect from Dekay release wise in the near future?
My Debut EP "Farwell to Planet Earth" is coming out in September on Break 3000 and James Flavor's Dirt Crew Recordings and I am really thankful for their support. I was really working hard on it for the last few months, so I am really looking forward to it. It's going to have three original Dekay tracks which in two of them I had the honor to feature Nunu on the guitars, and two beautiful Remixes from “Nick Chakona” and “Mano Le Tough”. Besides that, there is a Remix for “Cosmic Cowboy’s” Label “Kina Music” that's coming out in October, and another remix that I did with Elie Eidelman for Bobby Starrr two years ago, that should come out very soon on “Terence Parker's” Label “Parker Music Works” from Chicago. I am also in the middle of the making of a following EP but more details will come soon.
Artist of the Week:Dekay will air Tuesday August 10th at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.
