Artist of the Week:Alton Miller

Written by  Elie Eidelman

"I don't make house music in the typical fashion of what we think of when we think of house. It never is a straight up New York, Detroit or Chicago sound. It consist of all three and much more because I love music."

1. As one of the founders of the legendary Detroit club "Music Institute", have you ever thought of getting back in that game and opening a new venue?

Yes I have for sure, but on a smaller scale. I think my next project would be a bar/restaurant, but of course with great music and a really nice sound system and really good food.

2. I know you are a live percussionist. Do you still incorporate live instruments in your productions today? How important are the live instruments in creating the organic sound of your music?

I do always, and it is a major part of my recording process. A lot of the melodies that I write come from the rhythms. I try most of the time to start programming drums first because most of the things that I create are for the floor, and if the drums don't bump the tune is flat.

3. Your music has been described as "mature jazz tinged, soulful house grooves with flavours of African and roots music". Do you feel these influences are what gives you the unique sound of your productions?

No I don't actually. There is a lot of music out there that consist of these elements. I don't make house music in the typical fashion of what we think of when we think of house. It never is a straight up New York, Detroit or Chicago sound. It consist of all 3 and much more because I love music. Growing up in Detroit really influenced how I heard music, and is a big part of who I am today, but I love music period so my sound is a culmination of those things you mentioned above, but I tend to stray away from the norm with those elements and I think that's what you hear most. Not the elements but the way they are used.

4. From my outsider perspective it feels that your music is getting much more attention in Europe today then the US. Do you think this is true? How is the changes in the US music scene affecting you?

Yes I have. I have always gotten more attention in Europe. The changes are getting worse you know, but at the same time there is a greater chance of my music being heard by more people because of technology. I am used to the fact of knowing that my audience is in Europe. I have lived in Europe off and on so I understand what has happened and what continues to happen when it comes to dance music in regards to Europe and America.

5. Please tell our listeners about your future releases and what can we expect from Alton Miller in the coming year.

This is going to be a big year for sure. I have finally finished my 4th album which is to be released on Mixed Signals Records at the end of October and will start touring for that in November. Also, look for more releases on my own label Inner Muse Recordings. There are some really nice bars here in Chicago so I am going to spread my wings a bit and try some nights here this fall. Let's see what happens.

Artist of the Week:Alton Miller will air Tuesday August 31st at 18:00, with repeats Wednesday at 12:00, and Saturday at 10:00.
