With releases on Mirau, Internasjonal and Dirt Crew, Irish producer Mano Le Tough speaks of the Berlin experience, upcoming collaberations, and French teaching for this week's artist feature.
1. What has changed the most of about your music since you have moved to Berlin ?
It's funny actually, since moving to Berlin my music has in some way absorbed all of the influences I have been exposed to in the last three years and in some organic fashion become a lot closer to the electronic music I originally loved when I got into it a few years back... It's like some process where I have been exposed to so much, learnt so much and tried so many different things out just to realise what I originally loved when I started going to electronic parties is still what I love, or at least it's a more mature version of what I loved. I guess in simplistic terms I have gone from loving disco and new wave kind of stuff through techno, particularly dub-techno and deep house just to arrive at a house version of my earlier self... It's like i have unlearnt myself to know myself if that makes sense. I think what is important here is that Berlin has allowed me the time and provided me with the stimulae, i.e. parties and records that I don't think i would have been exposed to if i hadn't made the move...
2. Who would you love to work with ?
To be honest I would love to work with more live musicians and record people more...I would love to be in a live music project in the future with acoustic and electronic instruments. In a more electronic producion sense there are a few up and coming producers who I am lucky enough to call my friends who I would like to work and indeed some of whom I have started to work with such as Jacob Korn, Iron Curtis, Hrdvsion, The Drifter etc
3. Where do you see the Berlin music scene moving towards in the next year ?
It's funny in the three years I have been in Berlin the music here has changed, in my view at least, quite significantly and also not at all... its a kind of paradox... I guess it's representative of the electronic music world as a whole that as one thing gets boring more people do it and the next thing comes and it also gets boring, it's like how so many people played "minimal" then started playing bongo house etc... I guess I am more influenced by the outlying stuff than what happens in the scene as a whole. One thing that is encouraging is what is happening at the two best new venues in Kreuzberg, Kleine Reise and Farbfernseher... the music policy there is pretty open and there is a sense of fun that sometimes is impossible to have in the bigger venues, maybe these places will be at the forefront of a new thing in Berlin... only time will tell!!
4. What has been your biggest achievement so far ?
I still feel like I am just starting in a way and really looking forward to an exciting future, highlights so far have been performing at Sonar by day 2009 and I was also really happy with my release on Mirau earlier this year and the reception it got. I am also really excited about my two upcoming releases on Internasjonal and Dirt Crew Recordings...
5. Can you please finish this sentence, if i was not making music i would be....
Not very happy and probably teachingFrench very badly to some poor kids in Dublin!!
