I think the connection with the DPC Crew came after a night we've played at Zukunft in Zurich together where we've had crazy fun and of course I know the dudes since the now legendary Dachkantine. See I’m old.
Agnès, where did the name come from and what was the idea behind it?
Ha dude, it's funny that question comes up all the time. Well indeed, the name comes from the fact that I've been born with two boy's names already, so I thought about what would have my name been as a girl, and it's Agnès. On top of that it's a rather old name and in French speaking parts it's not really used anymore. We now have our bunch of Britney's, Wendy's and other Tiffany's which does not really turn me on to be honest
You have many different aliases. Does each one represent a different sound in your productions?
Yeah I just love names! Not really I think, maybe the most different from all is Modeste, which is my ambient or dub techno alias. Concerning the others it's more for me a way of showing my respect to the labels that trust my music enough to release it. It's actually funny. I even got slightly angry mails sometimes letting me know that some folks are bored to discover that yet again it's the same bastard behind this or that. Makes me laugh…
Recently you released you full-length album 'A Million Horses' on Drumpoet Community. How long have you been working on the album and how did the connection with the DPC crew come about?
Yes, I just released the LP in the end of August this year. Huuu it's been a long story to be honest, not really on the productions but more on the whole thing. I mean, I've sent loads of unfinished materials to Ron and Alex at Drumpoet in order to maybe release a sophomore Cavalier 12 ", after the Ride ‘Em EP in 2008. So they came back at me with the idea of releasing an LP, which I though was cool. The only glitch was that I really only sent them out sketches and one minute beats and stuff like that you know. So thereafter I've had to start the finalizing process on all these materials and that was the longest part. I think the connection with the DPC Crew came after a night we've played at Zukunft in Zurich together where we've had crazy fun and of course I know the dudes since the now legendary Dachkantine. See I’m old.
How would you describe the sound of the album? Where did the inspiration for the album come from?
Honestly it's a rather difficult question. Maybe I'd use the word 'honest' in first place. You know I do music because I like to do it. I love to tweak this and that and go where I want with this sound or that one. I mean it's a fun thing for me. I just love to spend 8 hours on a beat to get it where I want it to be. Some peoples might go, I really don't hear any difference from the first one and your last version, but I do.
Of course inspiring artists are part of my daily thoughts, but well I didn't try to emulate but rather do on 'A Million Horses'. Also, the productions presented here are ranging from various ages, for example Napoletano has been produced in 2007 and for some others in 2011 or 2008 and so on. I've actually finished all these tracks for the album indeed. At the end I'm very happy with the good reviews concerning the LP.
You also run your own label Sthlmaudio. Do people have a hard time pronouncing that? What's next for the label?
Ah yeah Sthlmaudio is a hard thing to say and not many knows that Sthlm simply stands for Stockholm, so in the end just say Stockholmaudio. The next 12" is in the starting blocks and comes from a close friend from Amsterdam, Gideon Bouwens. I'm so happy about that release because Gideon sent me these tracks and honestly it's the best things I've heard for a long time, it's like Quincy Jones doing House. Soul and analogue machinery are definitely there!
After that one, I'll jump in with a new alias, Torpedoman with some Garage House delicacies.
