Deepak Sharma

Written by  CURL

This is no hobby for us. Music is our way of life and Hidden Recordings is our focus to continue to grow and work with passionate, like-minded artists.. If there are penguins in Antarctica that love our music, then I would be happy to DJ for them on an iceberg.

1. Any news, updates, new productions, events, etc that you would like people to know about?

It’s been hectic in the studio as we’ve been working on original and remix material for the label.  We’re really excited on what is about to release and the remixers we have lined up who are adding their signature to our label. Over the next few months you’ll see a steady stream of releases with remixes from artists such as Adultnapper, Tony Rohr, Pheek, Argenis Brito, Ambivalent, Andrea Ferlin, Alexi Delano, Gregory Shiff, Franklin De Costa, Alland Byallo, Andrew Grant, DJ Seoul (Detroit Techno Militia), Noah Pred, John Tejada and Rene Breitbarth.  These are artists we have had a personal touch and feeling towards, so you can imagine our excitement to add them to the label. Also, we’ve seen dramatic impact with recent releases that have been supported by bigger DJs globally.

Our label nights continue in NYC at Bar 13, but also I’m working on gigs at other venues where I can play longer sets later into the evening.  Our connection to the crowds in NYC is strong and only becoming stronger with each party.  We hope to take this to other cities and Europe very soon.

2. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t let the ‘scene’ or dance music consume or life and stay focused on what is important and true to you. The only thing you can control is your advice.  Take the good with the bad and stay humble and always keep perspective on life.  Other notable pieces of advice include “don’t bring shitty records with you when you DJ”, djing is about creating a moment and for labels, always press vinyl.

3. What makes a party good & bad?

The sound-system is really critical for our type of music, especially for me with a deeper and heavier sound.  I think if the sound is right, the music can breath more and you the people feel it more in their heart and stomach.  The more they can feel the music, the more they release themselves to the party.  When a party can reach a height of people who are feeling the music, it has no boundaries and people can go all night.  Of course the DJ in control of the music must play the right music, but the best DJ in the world won’t get the reaction without a proper sound system letting the music tell its story.

4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I will be here and still producing music with Dieter Krause and hopefully Hidden Recordings is considered one of the world’s finest labels.  This is no fad or hobby for us.  Music is our way of life and Hidden Recordings is our focus to continue to grow and work with passionate, like-minded artists.  We want to carry our label nights to all cities that are open to our music.  If there are penguins in Antarctica that love our music, then I would be happy to DJ for them on an iceberg.  My goal is to make sure everyone has heard our music, so this could take time.  But the point is, many people come and go in this ‘scene’, but few have the strength to stay on forever, and that I’m prepared to do.  So let’s have this chat again in 10 years mate, and hopefully we’ve seen exponential growth and success.

5. Your favourite movie of all time?

The Martin Scorsese film, Goodfellas with Robert De Niro, an absolute masterpiece on the gangster life in NY is a definite favorite movie of all time.  The acting and story are incredible and this film was actually the inspiration to the Hidden Recordings logo.  I connected to this film because I liked the loyalty they showed each other in the early part of the film, and how they hustled to live the good life.  Of course it didn’t end this way, but it’s not a film to learn moral stories, just to enjoy how a group of people dreamt of living a certain life, and doing whatever it takes to live it.
