Dairmount & Nowakowski on RWAV

Written by  Elie Eidelman
Newcomer producer Nowakowski will appear on the Room With A View Radioshow Saturday night along side label head Dairmount, to mark his Reframe EP release for the label. Tune IN! from 23:00.

Where do you come from, how long have you been djing/producing?

I've been living in Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast for all my life. My father is a musician but I'm not quite sure that is what triggered me to start making beats, but at least it got me listening to music! I grew up in a pretty conventional Swedish suburb and I've always loved music - as soon as I became a teenager and discovered dance music I saw these huge parties on youtube and told myself that I wanted to become a DJ. A couple of months after I turned 18 I got myself some DJ gear and started to DJ right away, some years later the natural thing was to start making beats. I've been trying to be somewhat serious about the beat making for the last two or three years or something like that, so I've been DJing for like six years and producing for about three.

What music did you grow up on and what are your influences today?

I grew up with what was popular in Sweden during the nineties, cheesy pop music, eurodisco, boy bands and spice girls - during my teen years I got hit by the big wave of mainstream house music of the early 00's which sort of triggered me to start discovering the underground side of house and later on techno. Today I am very fascinated by the anatomy sampled hiphop-beats, which is what I tend to listen to a lot - yet I still have a large passion for new music, so that's where I'm moving back and forth, between the new house music and hiphop in general.

How did the connection with RWAV Records come about?

In a genuine demo-way! I was very much into the RWAV sound at the time being and I had some stuff that I'd love the label to hear, after sending I got some feedback, since then the dialogue has been so good that I've been feeling very comfortable working with the label. I guess that much of the stuff released on RWAV had an impact on me as a producer, so the more I worked with the beats the more I somehow adapted to the particular sound being pushed by the label.

Your new release is getting great feedback. How long has this been in the making and when and where can we hear your productions?

The EP is a combination of my latest stuff together with some old material - meaning that some stuff in there has been waiting for release for almost two years whilst other tracks are just a couple of months old. The whole thing is a product of skillful work by Phil at RWAV feedbacking me as well as me focusing my output towards the label - after sending lots of ideas to the label we sort of agreed on the tracks and I did some final touches. It has indeed gotten some nice feedback from artists that inspire me a lot such as Garnier, Gerd and Lodemann  - apparently Jimpster played Highdub during the ADE which feels quite wicked. Now the plan is to start summing up lots of material that I've done lately for a possible next release, the plan is to stay with RWAV in the future... That is my home label now!

The mix you recorded is displaying your 'influences & inspiration' by other artists and feature music going back to the last 10 years. Can you tell us more about it?

The mix is indeed a sum up of tracks that have influenced me for the last couple of years. You might notice that from what I've released recently, it doesn't sound much like the tracks in the recorded mix, the here point being that it's not always the sound itself that inspires, it can just as well be the tracks aesthetics in terms of arrangement, timbre of synths/samples, drum patterns and so on. Many of the tracks are from the period 2008 to 2010 which is when I really started to take my production seriously and tried to create a sound. During that period I listened a lot the current releases and much of it has been following me since. I guess the combination of my present inspiration of hiphop as well as the influences of the tracks in the featured mix might be a proper way to sum up the sound of where I am right now as a producer. I definitely have the passion to keep going from here, I'm just not quite certain in which direction I might turn, which is one of the reasons why staying with RWAV.

Room With A View Radioshow will air Saturday December 4th at 23:00, and repeat Monday at 13:00.
